Smart idea for keeping your work organized! I need to incorporate something similar in my own office. I’ve heard of the Rule of Thirteen before, too, but have never been able to work up to that many at a time. The Rule of Seven sounds like a much better plan.

Hello Lori. On the subject of prompts, I don’t usually try to make full stories out of them, but I enjoy writing scenes from prompts that will never be published.

I write five hundred word responses to prompts, one at the beginning of each writing session. I create scenes and get into the flow of my writing. In fact, from one of these scenes a novel is starting to form in my head.

I think that writing prompts, and writing practice, are great for fun, especially between projects… and even if you don’t start something with the intention of publication, you never know what it might become.

I’m lucky to abide by a rule of three, at this point, but I do understand the point. And, when for a very brief period of time I had five submissions pending, one placed in an AWF contest, one was accepted to Chicken Soup and one was outright reject. Two I haven’t heard on yet. I really need to get to submitting as when those are the odds, you get acceptances!
